$300M from IBM w/ $20K to resellers

by Jason Bean on April 6th, 2006

IBM is launching a huge ad campaign to take on Microsoft and try and get people to switch from Microsoft Exchange Server to Lotus Notes & Domino.

Along with those efforts IBM is offering a $20,000 “bounty” to resellers that can get people to switch. I’ve used Lotus Notes and I was really not impressed with anything they offered, so I can’t say I’d be switching anytime soon.

Is Lotus Notes better than Exchange? The argument could obviously be made for both sides. What concerns me is that a reseller is being offered $20,000 as a reward for getting customers to switch. I don’t know all the details of the reward being offered and the requirements, and I would have companies would have a close relationship with their resellers to be able to trust them. And I’m sure resellers get a bonus from either party for selling products, but $20K seems pretty high.

I’m not sure I could trust a reseller is doing what’s best for my company knowing they’ll be pocketing a nice bonus for selling me one option over another.
