A Virtual Earth Better than a Google Earth

by Jason Bean on November 8th, 2006

Virtual Earth Aerial View
Days behind the release of Google’s Google Earth 4 beta, Microsoft releases their latest iteration of their Virtual Earth product.

Coming late to the party may have actually been accurate in showing up fashionably late. Virtual Earth may just outdo Google’s Earth according to CNET.

As I was playing around with the program myself, I don’t think it’s quite as easy to use as Google Earth. The other thing that strikes me is that the visual quality seems to have gotten worse than better. I had played with both programs quite awhile back and mentioned on my personal blog that I liked the clarity of images better from Virtual Earth than I did Google Earth, but that’s not the case anymore.

The other thing I thought was interesting was that you can see Indianapolis on a super high aerial view, just see the image at the beginning of the post. I’ve surrounded the dot that is Indianapolis with the red circle.

I’m loving this app…much better than Google Earth and I am a huge fan of that. The photos are more up-to-date and the detail is amazing.

I’m not sure how up-to-date the photos are, when I was playing around and saw Indianapolis metro from the expanded view and kept zooming, I eventually hit downtown and noticed that the photos still included Market Square Arena, which has been gone now for a number of years.

    Hi All Experts,
Does anyone use google earth images as ground image planes for use in aerial scenes. I know how to stitch them together but are there any tools or tricks to make sure that the images are at the same height, angle and such to make sure they stitch well. I know in the pro version you can get bigger images but im not going to pay for the pro version when i could stitch multiple images together…
