If you’re currently running Windows 98 or Me editions, you have a flaw on your hands that you’re going to have to decide what you’re going to do with. Microsoft has already decided that they will NOT be releasing a patch for the hole. Support for 98/Me will be ending in July, so they feel the cost for investment to fix the issue is not worth it.
I can see both sides.
On one hand, there’s got to be a point where a company stops supporting products and Microsoft isn’t the first, only or last to do this.
On the other hand, it’s not like there’s a shortage of people this actually impacts. I’m sure there are quite a few people still using both 98 and Me, so it’s tough to leave them hanging like this.
The good news is, and what’s not being mentioned in the headlines is that you’re not out of luck. If you have a firewall product installed you’re safe. Or, if you’re not connected to the internet on that machine, you’re safe too.
I’ve got a computer that’s currently running 98SE, but right now it’s not being used and isn’t connected to the internet.
What do you think? Are you still using one of these OS’s?
