Bill & Melinda Gates on Oprah

by Jason Bean on April 12th, 2006

Bill & Melinda Gates were guests on Oprah today. Not in studio audience guests but video recorded segments. The topic of the episode is the poor state of the nation’s educational system. Not a lot of argument there. Interesting fact that Oprah mentioned was that the United States ranked 24th in the world in mathematics.

We definitely need to figure out what to do in this country to improve this situation. The financial support of the Gates and the Gates Foundation will definitely help, but it’s going to take much more than that.

I found out that here in Indiana, students under 18 that drop out of school will have their driver’s licenses revoked, unless they have a health, work or other viable reason to do so.

Gates claims to be concerned about the deplorable state of American education. Yet, what has his company contributed in the form of educational software? A piece of crippleware called Encarta (which is more of a toy encyclopedia than an adult resource), a flight simulator, and numerous violent games to boost sales of his X-Box. This from a software company that has more cash assets than any in history.
