Building a Better Browser (for Pocket PC)

by Jason Bean on July 11th, 2006

I’m really enjoying having the web on my PPC-6700. I’ve discovered that Gmail and Bloglines works great with the device.

The reason they work so great? Because both sites recognize I’m connecting with a mobile device and adjust their display to work with the smaller screen size and functionality of the device itself.

I’d still like to be able to browse to some other sites though without any problems. Yahoo! Mail for example doesn’t work at all on the browser. The new version of Yahoo! Mail doesn’t work on all existing desktop browser versions either. It’s recognizing the PPC browser as IE4. Is this the same IE4 I’d have installed on my desktop a few years ago?

What’s everyone else using for your mobile browser? I’ve heard Opera may work. Does anyone have any feedback for me?

Yikes! It’s 2:12am and I do have a “day” job to get to. Let me know though. I’ll be back!

Well, I’m still using the default PIE for some time now. I don’t surf much on the net with my Pocket PC because it really annoys me when I can’t connect to some websites. I’m not sure about opera myself yet but I’m currently requesting the product for a review. Check out my review site for further update on this. Thank you.

If I want it quick, I use IE. If I want multiple windows or need to deal with somewhat complex sites, I use MiniMo.
