Can’t Click Links in Outlook

by Jason Bean on December 14th, 2007

outlook-security-error

All of a sudden I’ve started getting this error message in Outlook when I try to click on a link. I’ve looked through all of my settings and options and can’t find where to go to fix it. I’m fairly certain it’s a security setting somewhere.

I do a quick search in Google on exactly the text of the message and get this:

This is not an Outlook error. The most common cause is a corrupt registry key in Internet Explorer 6. The registry key found at
               HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command
is either damaged or corrupt.

To fix it, try  resetting Web settings in Internet Explorer. If this does not resolve the issue, you’ll need to import the registry key from another computer.

That’s annoying! I’ve got to reset my IE settings to fix it? That just stinks!

Try using Resultant Set of Policy (Rsop.msc) to see if any policy is accidentally applied.
