Default Address Book in Outlook
I cannot for the life of me figure out where I need to go to tell Outlook to always use my “Contacts” folder as the the default address book when I’m looking up someone’s e-mail address.
I’d also like to suppress everyone’s fax number from showing up as a separate contact option in this list.
Can anyone out there help me with this one?

9 opinions for Default Address Book in Outlook

For a single individual it’s relatively easy:
1. open up the address book
2. Select Tools-Options
3. Change setting under “Show this address list first” drop down.
Now what I want to do is set this for my entire organization, I’ve done it before with 3rd parts tools (ScriptLogic) but AFAIK there is no GPO or other method to do so.

I’m in Outlook 2007. Don’t have that option. You had me thinking I was an idiot there for a minute. Do you have another idea? Were you referring to 2007 or 2003?

I’m using 2003, sorry I didn’t know you had 2007 (nor would I have expected it to be different)

I have the exact same problem Outlook 2007 and
SBS2003 on the server.
It’s getting old switching Address books when sending mail.

I Outlook 2007 choose TOOLS then ADDRESS BOOK. From the Address Book window choose TOOLS (up top, to the right of FILE and EDIT) then OPTIONS and using the “Show this address list first:” dropdown box select “Contacts”. You may also want to do the same in the “Keep personel addresses in:” dropdown box.

[…] Scott Thompson nailed the answer to the question I posted awhile back regarding how to set the default Address Book that’s displayed and searched in Outlook 2007. The only problem now is that it was so simple to fix my problem I feel like an idiot for not having found that setting without any help. […]

Along those same lines- is it possible to have the ‘default’ address book be different for different apps? IE- when you send an e-mail, you see the contacts first, but when you send a fax- you see the fax contacts list first instead? That would be really helpful.

3rd idiot here!! I use Act! as my main contact DB and there is an option of adding the email to the DB in default. However you have to send the email from outlook, via the DB and this needs the default address book changed to make run smoothly….
thanks :-))
