Location Specific Rules in Outlook and Other Mobile Settings
A new feature request made itself known to me today as I was working onsite at a client’s office. My colleague and I would like to be able to setup location specific rules in Outlook.
For example, we’d like a rule that only runs when we’re onsite for a particular client. If someone from that client e-mails us, an auto-response back to them would be that we’re at lunch and will be back onsite in an hour or that we’re located in a specific office in their building today.
Other potential rules could be that e-mails received from that client have a different alert or priority level that appears when onsite for that client.
The only drawback to that would be that when you log into Outlook you’d be prompted to specify your location. For the benefits though, I don’t think that would be too much to ask.
Similar functionality would be nicely integrated into instant messaging clients and perhaps even voice-mail systems.
That could lead to even more discussion that we’ve played around with before but have never blogged about. I’d like to setup different working environments for my desktop, network settings and default programs to be used depending on my location as well.
Does anyone else think this could be helpful?
