Microsoft cuddles the fox for RSS icon

by John on December 15th, 2005

New RSS Icon
New RSS Icon.

It had to happen. The new version of Internet Explorer, Windows IE7, will use the Firefox icon for RSS feeds. Despite a competition to choose a new badge for the service’s button, the IE team paid a visit to Mozilla to secure the consensus.

Jane at IE Blog explains: “I’m excited to announce that we’re adopting the icon used in Firefox. John and Chris [Mozilla] were very enthusiastic about allowing us (and anyone in the community) to use their icon. This isn’t the first time that we’ve worked with the Mozilla team to exchange ideas and encourage consistency between browsers, and we’re sure it won’t be the last.”

How simple the world becomes when people cooperate like this. Imagine if there were dozens of icons out there all pointing to the same thing. Say, one labeled “RSS”, another “XML”, and yet more “Feeds”, or “OPML”, or “Garbage” … Deja vu all over again.

Time for a change, we think. Well done Jane at MS IE team, who gets the last word here:

We’ll be using the icon in the IE7 command bar whenever a page has a feed associated with it, and we’ll also use it in other places in the browser whenever we need a visual to represent RSS and feeds. Look for more details on the look and feel of IE7 when we post the public pre-release build next year.
