Microsoft Live Mail

by Jason Bean on April 25th, 2006

Live Mail vs. Gmail
I’ve been beta testing Microsoft Live mail although now it’s pretty much publicly available. The interface is a little improvement over the old Hotmail, but it’s still nowhere near enough for me to even think about switching away from my Gmail or Yahoo! account.

Right now I’m really only using my Live mail account as my spam address when a website needs a valid e-mail address to sign-up for something. [See bottom of this message for a cool way I just heard of to deal with spam]

The thing that’s most annoying to me right now about Live mail is the gi-normous banner ad space at the top of the page. Check out the image above to compare. Come on guys, Google obviously knows a thing or two about advertising and has figured out that obtrusive is doing more damage than good.

Spam E-mail Tip: If you own your own domain (which you can do for free with Office Live now) you can begin using e-mail aliases to deal with Spam e-mail. Let’s say you sign-up for an account at iTunes, enter your e-mail address as itunes@yourdomain.com. If you notice you start receiving spam mail on that address, you can just begin forwarding that e-mail right back to iTunes spam alert e-mail address to let them know. Can you imagine how much more companies would pay attention to that stuff if we all started forwarding our spam right back to them!
