Microsoft Should Buy Yahoo! for $44.6B

The big news today is Microsoft’s offer of almost $50 billion dollars for Yahoo! Yahoo has recently announced layoffs of their own workforce so they are in need of something serious happening to shake things up a bit.

he surprise offer of $31 per share, made late Thursday and announced Friday, seizes on Yahoo’s weakness while Microsoft tries to muscle up in a high-stakes battle with Google likely to define the technology landscape for years to come.

I believe this would be a great buy for Microsoft. They’ve got the money for sure and it would solidify their #2 position in the online search market.

Perhaps more importantly than that though are the products that are part of the Yahoo! umbrella.

  • flickr would be an obvious nice addition in the offering
  • I believe Yahoo Music is a great product and for Microsoft to merge that into their own Zune offerings and management application would be even better.
  • Adding the user base of Yahoo! Mail would be a nice additional group of users.
  • Yahoo! News is one of the top providers of news information to many web surfers.
  • For blogging, they would be getting MyBlogLog

I just think for the price and timing, this would be a great thing for Microsoft to jump into. I think they need to keep and capitalize on the Yahoo! name and brand recognition. Don’t go changing it to something stupid, that’s for sure.
