Microsoft’s New Urge
I’ve spoken about Microsoft’s new partnership with MTV over the past couple of days. MTV’s new Urge offering that will be integrated into Microsoft’s New Media Center platform could become a nice rival to Apple’s iTunes.
The Urge service will offer exclusive content from MTV and have an all-you-can download subscription option, but won’t be compatible with iPod.
Somebody help me with this, do things not work with iPod because Apple’s locked them down, or for some other reason? If it’s the first option, and people complain about Microsoft being closed? Because I know Yahoo! Music Engine doesn’t work with iPod either.
Got another question for everyone. If I developed a music program and had a little option that included a configuration setting to specify where my iTunes music folder was located, and when I imported CD’s into iTunes I did it in MP3 format, couldn’t my music program access any of the files that are in the iTunes music library, including podcasts? I think I do know that songs purchased from iTunes are in the AAC format, but obviously songs purchased from iTunes would have at least more of a good reason to not work in other players.
The article also talks a little bit about the Xbox 360 at the very end if you’re interested.
