No plans for web-based Office, says Brin

by John on October 10th, 2005

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, has told John Battelle at the Web 2.0 conference, “We don’t have any plans [for a web-based Office suite].”

The Register reports : “However Brin left the door open a little. Documents would be easier to work with in the future, he promised, but he didn’t think a fat client was the way to go.”

“I don’t really think that the thing is to take a previous generation of technology and port them directly,” said Brin. However distributed thin web applications allowed you to do “new and better things than the Office package and more.”

After a week of intense speculation that a Google/Sun Microsystems alliance would launch a web-hosted version of OpenOffice, the resulting announcement took the world by surprise more by its lameness than radical content. It amounted to nothing more than the Google toolbar being offered as part of Sun’s Java Runtime download.

“Google really, really wants more Toolbar distribution,” said John Battelle, clearly perplexed.
