QuickTime Virus

Say what you will about Microsoft strong-arming software into the operating system and onto people’s computers, then making it hard to get rid of it.

I’ve NEVER tried as hard to get rid of a piece of Microsoft software as I have trying to get rid of the Apple QuickTime Task Tray icon to disappear from my start-up options.

I run msconfig to make it go away and it just comes back over-and-over-and-over-and-over. I’m sure it’s partly because I’ve got QuickTime set to automatically look for and install updates and anytime it sees that I’ve changed a setting from the way they want it to be they “update” my settings and reset the value, or even worse, add another entry into the registry for it.

Folks…that’s! annoying.

    Try adding a ‘;’ to it’s entry in Regedit.
    Run Regedit, go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Double click on the quicktime task and add a semicolon at the start of the entry in Value Data. This stops it from running, but as the entry is still there, QT doesn’t try to “fix” it. I use this for any entry in the registry that I don’t want to start. It also means I can easily undo it if I have to.

    Oh that’s great! Already done it and ready to start tagging some more entries to stop running.

    You could just open the QuickTime prefs and turn off the tray icon… I’m pretty sure it’s an option, atleast it used to be.

    And your comment form here is -extremly- hard to read the labels… you could guess it’s a microsoft blog :p

    Thanks Eric, but I don’t want the icon to just go away. I want the application to stop running at start-up. I’m not sure what the comment labels have to do with it being a Microsoft blog.

    it was the lack of attention to detail.

    As for not running at startup, did you try stopping it in the Services panel?

    Yes, I repeatedly stop it in the services panel from running. It continues to come back.
