Role Changes at Microsoft
Big news today is that the man himself has said he’ll be reducing his role dramatically by 2008. Much of his role will begin to be filled by Ray Ozzie, who’s big push is to change Microsoft into more of a “services” organization and not so much software. Granted, the two of those could be considered the same thing, but there are some inherent differences into at least the overall different impression between the two, but that’s a different post.
By July 2008, Gates said, he will be working full-time for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — which he has funded with his software billions to promote health and education projects around the world — but will still be working “part-time at Microsoft.”
“Obviously, this decision was a very hard one for me to make,” Gates told a news conference. “The change we’re seeing today is not a retirement, it’s a reordering of my priorities.”
I’m very pleased with the things that Bill Gates does in his “off” time with the foundation. I believe it will be interesting to see if the image of Microsoft changes as a whole with Bill Gates less involved in that areas, and the public begins to see a more active Gates related to helping with world problems and other philanthropy.
I believe Ozzie will definitely bring new vision and insight into the company, that’s obviously why he was hired in the first place right?
Ozzie’s track record of ground-breaking software and respect among programmers is almost unparalleled in the industry. Ozzie created Lotus Notes, one of the first popular corporate e-mail programs, which was then sold to IBM.
I personally can’t stand Lotus Notes, but we’ll see how things go.
