Screen Real Estate is Important

It’s not a huge thing, but it is important to me. One of the things I’m really enjoying with the new IE7 is the better use of screen real estate. IE7 takes up about 20% less space for the exact same toolbar configuration as Firefox 1.5. I haven’t downloaded the RC3 candidate for Firefox yet, has that been improved?

WOW! Great point. This has a lot of value to publishers. More space = more money. Another of the more interesting aspects of the IE vs. Firefox battle is the development of the ecosystem of extensions or add-ons. It’s not just about bugs and features. Right now Firefox had a great advantage in this space but you can see Microsoft trying to catch up.
Microsoft has an interesting partner in Trailfire, a recommended download for IE7. See link:

But this extension is also available for Firefox. See link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3524/
I think the ecosystem for Firefox and IE will decide who wins this battle. What do you think?

How about the copmparison without all the 3rd party toolbars loaded?, or alteas cut it down to one.
Also you’ll notice that Firefox has a menu bar while IE7 does not, I’ll admin I haven’t used IE7 but it seems like not having a menu bar would be extremely limiting.

How many times do you actual go to and use the menu bar? For me, not too often. How many times do I use my Google and Yahoo toolbar? EVERY VISIT TO THE PAGE. I’m comparing the two products based on how I use it and what’s important for me as a user. IE7 does have a menu bar, but they’ve divided it into logical groups of information and used icons to access each group.

I use the menu bar all the time, mosttly the Tools, Bookmarks & File menus.
As for the Yahoo & Google toolbar, I have no use for those and they aren’t even installed o my machine, I can Google search from the Firefox address bar, though typically I just click the “Home” icon which briongs me to Google so I can search.
