SitePoint Responds to Browser Wars

by Jason Bean on October 26th, 2006

Sitepoint, the website resource for developers/webmasters and other tech evangelists has responded to the browser wars in their latest SitePoint Tech Times newsletter #151.

They have good review of IE7, specifically CSS support but encourage developers to have a “can’t we all just get along” policy for both browsers.

And in that respect, Internet Explorer 7 is most certainly a very respectable stride in the right direction. I just don’t understand how people can claim that IE 7 has “horrible CSS support.” Microsoft has done an excellent job of fixing the most significant shortcomings in IE 6’s CSS support with this release, and based on recent progress of these two browsers’ CSS support, I find myself beginning to doubt Mozilla’s ability to maintain its lead over Microsoft in this area. And heck, if I was only going to use the browser with the best CSS support today, I’d be hitching my wagon to Opera.

I continue to be pleased with my experience with IE7, but I also maintain my connection and love for Firefox for various tasks. Can you feel the love? I think we should.

Yes I agree with you, IE7 is an improvement in terems of CSS support, even if I think webmasters should avoid producing CSS or HTML in favor of any browser.

Thank you for sharing this story with me !

That’s just the piont- to produce CSS not aimed at any specific browser. However, IE makes this impossible by not conforming to standards. And even if IE7 is better at CSS support than IE6, it still has a long way to go. I agree that one does not choose a broswer based upon CSS support alone, however, abiding by and respecting web standards in general is most definetly a criterion for choosing a browser.

Can one of you give me 3 actual examples of IE7 and Microsoft not rendering CSS accurately?
