SQL Network Connection Problems with Vista

Currently running into some walls, firewalls to be exact, when I’m trying to connect to my business partner’s computer to access a SQL database that we use to manage our client contacts, project tasks, to do items, etc.

We’re sitting in the office on the same network, connected to the same switch and I can’t see his computer without him turning off his firewall. I realize that’s a good thing. His laptop is the only machine in the office (3 laptops, 1 server, 1 desktop) that’s running Vista. He’s also running Trend Micro’s security tool.

We’ve tried adding my computer to his allowed list, opening up the SQL ports, etc, but nothing has worked. Anyone have an idea of what we’re missing here?

    I have heard on the grape vine of SQL sites and forums that the current SQL server is not compatible with SQl at all…. a severe problem!

    hope you’ll be able to get it running, which SQL server have you currently got?

    Also one other thought, forgive me if it sounds rude. But when you enable all ports in the SQL surface area management tool, are you then stopping SQL server and restarting?

    I’m not stopping and restarting SQL server when I open up ports in the Windows Firewall. Is that what you mean?

    No, I meant on the machine which is running SQL server, you will need to go into SQL server Surface area manager (assuming you are using SQL server 2005) and enable all ports and then under services click stop, then click start.

    It should be ok after that…

    which firewall are you using? You may need to specifically allow the laptops IP address on the firewall too.
