Surface Computing and Microsoft Playtable

by Jason Bean on June 5th, 2007

It’s been a few days now since all the news articles on Microsoft new surface computing technology has “surfaced”. It’s been out there for a little while, but has come to the top over the last few days due to all the videos and announcements available about it’s functions and features.

This article is basically saying who knows when we’ll actually see this type of functionality in a real world product.

When I asked Wilson whether we might be seeing elements of this in a Microsoft product anytime soon, he declined to comment. But at the very least, it’s obviously attracting attention within the company: Bill Gates gave a conceptual demonstration that used this technology at the last Consumer Electronics Show and during at least one other public appearance since then.

Regardless though, there’s live examples of people using the technology which is pretty impressive. The question I have though is what part of your house are you going to give up to place this new table in to use? If they could pop that technology into a durable table that could work as your actual coffee table or dining room table, that would be really sweet. I could also envision a little portion of a kitchen counter using the technology. The biggest drawback I see is the separate projector that’s needed to project onto the surface.

I know this, if it happened, it would actually help me keep those flat surfaces in my house from collecting everything else we sit on it over the days of the week.
