Symantec’s “Genesis” vs. OneCare

by Jason Bean on February 3rd, 2006

Symantec is working on a new security service, codenamed “Genesis” to compete head-to-head with Microsoft’s OneCare application. The application is being billed as a single software solution and “not a suite or a bundle of tools”. Features of the application are:

  • Anti-virus
  • Spyware
  • Phishing
  • Hacker/Intrusion attacks
  • Firewall
  • Spam tools
  • PC optimization & maintenance
  • Offline backup
  • Online backup
  • Website authentication
  • Online shopping security

I’m personally done with anything from Symantec or McAfee. I currently use Computer Associates’s ezTrust software and am waiting to see what Microsoft delivers as the final product for anti-virus support. I’m waiting for anti-virus software that provides free updates supported by advertising revenue generated by ads that are displayed while virus scans occur. Maybe Google should look into that!

Are they trying to play off the momentum of the Xbox 360? Why else would they do it? Symantec’s product was previously known as “Genesis”, another game platform! What’s the deal? […]
