Two Years Ago Today - January 3rd, 2006
I’m sure that date doesn’t mean much to anyone else but for me it marks the two year anniversary of my first post on the Microsoft Weblog site.
Meeting of the E-mail Guru’s talked about the heads of Microsoft’s Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Gmail getting together and talking about the development of each of their webmail platforms.
Nothing earth shattering but it was my first post none-the-less. Taking a look back on those three apps, all three have progressed but honestly I think Yahoo and Hotmail have moved furthest. I’m still split on whether that means Gmail hasn’t moved much at all because of paralysis or because they were so far ahead of the game back then compared to the other two.
Windows now has Live Mail which is a huge step forward from what Hotmail was, a major improvement. My only complaint still with them is the screen real estate used by advertisements. No matter though because now I’m using Outlook Connector and funneling all my Hotmail e-mail through Outlook. I’m still amazed at the reduction in spam I’ve seen actually hit my Inbox.
Yahoo Mail has made some serious improvements as well. Nothing too shocking, more use of AJAX dragging and dropping functionality and a little clean-up of the overall interface. I like it a lot.
I still use Yahoo for the core collection Inbox for e-mail from all my friends and family. Hotmail is for Microsoft related business activities and Gmail is my general all-purpose e-mail account for things that don’t fit into one of the other two apps.
Two years later and these three are still working together nicely, just like their developers did back on my first post.
Here’s to another two-years and beyond!
