Vista Gives a Little More Freedom
I remember hearing on one of the TWiT podcasts about the concern over the proposed restrictions on Vista being able to get reinstalled on a machine for legitimate purposes. This would occur if you had to reformat your computer or were a computer builder yourself and frequently rebuilt your entire machine.
Originally I believe Vista was to only allow 2 installs, which would be considered pretty stinkin’ restrictive. The rumors seem to be unfounded now though as the restrictions won’t be nearly as bad as originally thought.
According to a spokesperson in Microsoft’s Licensing Department, simply swapping out a component such as a CPU or graphics card will not require you to re-activate Vista; only replacing a hard drive plus another piece of your rig at the same time will necessitate a re-activation. And instead of the single license transfer stipulation that we’d heard before, Redmond has now gone on record saying that you can re-install Vista up to 10 times without penalty
And there you have it, nothing to worry about for your average and above average user.
