Windows 7 in 2009?
Lots of articles and posts lately about Microsoft gearing to launch Windows 7 in late 2009. We know that will more than likely end up being 2010, but that’s not the important part.
An article by Mary Jo Foley at All About Microsoft on ZDNet says that Windows 7 and Windows Live are going to be even more tightly integrated when everything’s said and done.
It just seems weird to me to already be talking about Windows 7. Obviously they’ve been working on it already and should be, but why are we so worried about it now? Shouldn’t we be thinking about and wondering what the next service pack releases for Windows Vista should be? Don’t you think there will be a couple before the next Windows OS is released? I do. It needs them.
Foley’s article did mention something interesting thought that I will comment about. The idea of tying a Windows account to a Windows Live ID? Aren’t that already doing that? I was thinking when I setup my mom’s new laptop I was prompted to input a Windows Live ID if I had one. She didn’t so I skipped that step.
What types of Windows Live services do you think need/should be tightly integrated into the Windows operating system user experience?
- LiveSpaces and homepage: I can see how this would be nice. Imagine some of the old type of active web desktop that came out with ‘98? E-mail, News, weather are obvious choices to include with the sidebar functionality.
- SkyDrive integration would make sense. The ability for your SkyDrive to show-up as a mapped drive in the OS if an Internet connection is detected would be nice.
- Messenger already has fairly close integration into the OS with start-up and sharing files and using Remote Access controls.
- OneCare is very easy to see the benefits. They would absolutely have to fix how you manage your OneCare circle with a single Windows Live ID.

Gee wiz…I hope it’s better than vista, which I grow to loath more and more each day.
When I am behind and want to make a client think I’m working hard, I change the GUI fast and quick. I wonder if MS didn’t do somthing like this with vista.
It’s slow, annoying and things you could get to in one or two clicks require google to find now.
