Windows Live SkyDrive
Playing around a little bit with the SkyDrive service that’s part of the Windows Live suite. I think this is a good idea, but it needs a few things immediately for me to really think of it as an everyday option for usefulness.
- Absolutely need to increase storage size up from 1GB. I’ve got a 2GB USB stick and a 250GB portable drive that are almost always with me. I think to really be helpful, the storage size should be about double the size of the average USB thumb drive.
- It appears there should be a drag-and-drop functionality to the site but I’m not seeing anything. I should be able to map a drive on my computer to the SkyDrive service and it show as available when I’ve got an Internet connection.
- Synchronization using the mapped drive option for offline access would be great!
Until at least two of those items are fixed, I just don’t see myself even thinking of this as a legitimate storage option. The website talked about an upload tool but I never found it anywhere. At first I thought it was because I was using Firefox, but tried opening the site in IE7 and didn’t see anything different.

I think the best thing to do would also be to be able to map a drive to the space avaliable on the internet.

actually, there is drag&drop function avalible on IE. just try upload file, and look carefully on the page where you should open up to 5 files.

I am facing a problem using SkyDrive: I’ve already uploaded de files, but when I try to open them in other computer (download), I click on the window and nothing happens. I’ve heard that other users are facing the same problem.
Interesting: if I user FireFox, everything goes fine. It seems to be a bug related with SkyDrive x IE (7.0, in my case).

I am also facing a problem with Skydrive. I am using a Mac and Firefox, and when I download a ppt or word file it comes down to my desktop as an empty file. It is really a mystery as to why it is doing/not doing the normal download.
Any help would be great. thanks!

1. SkyDrive is out of Beta, and now has 5GB of storage.
2. Again, SkyDrive is out of Beta, and now has ‘drag and drop’ functionality.
3. This option is not yet avaible, but could be in the future, as many users would like this, and the ability to have it as a drive in the ‘My Computer’ or ‘Computer’ folder.
Thanks.
