Windows Mobile 5.0 and ActiveSync 4.1 Challenges
I got a new smart phone today, the problem is it’s being pretty dumb and irritating the fire out of me. I know I risk large amounts of ridicule by posting this on here, but hey, I’m not afraid to fire back at Microsoft for some things they really need to get fixed.
I’m on Sprint and the new phone I got is Pocket PC PA10A1. I’ve been more than happy with Sprint’s service, except when you talk to their accounting department, then they all seem to have lost their minds. So, I’ll be sure and check on the costs of my recent upgrade to their PCS Vision Plan. Should only be another $15/mnth.
So, I’m very happy with my new device. I’ve got everything set the way I like it (at least for now). I’ve got the Wi-Fi working with my home network no problem. I got ActiveSync4.1 installed, but I can’t get a successful synch to occur. I keep getting the following error codes:
ActiveSync encountered a problem on the desktop.
Support Code:85010014
and
Synchronization Error 85010017
Now, I’ve already read the following, and not gotten anywhere further after following their directions.
Synchronization Issues with Microsoft Outlook
If you are experiencing difficulties setting up and completing synchronization of data with Microsoft Outlook, please refer to the following section to find details about symptoms and workarounds.Synchronization Error 85010017
In some cases, ActiveSync will fail to synchronize data with Microsoft Outlook with Synchronization Error code 85010017. This could be due to the presence of large volume of items on first sync or specific large items such as a calendar item with many meeting attendees. Some targeted instances of this have been fixed in ActiveSync 4.1.
If you are experiencing this on Windows 2000 or Windows XP SP1, please upgrade to ActiveSync 4.1. Otherwise you can try archiving your inbox to reduce the number of items in the mailbox for synchronization.
Synchronization Error 85010014
ActiveSync reports a Synchronization Error code 85010014 because of one of the following reasons:
- Synchronization Fails because Application Data Folder is Redirected
- Synchronization Fails because Outlook is in Offline Mode
- Synchronization Fails because of Outlook script blocking
- Synchronization Fails because ActiveSync is incorrectly registered with Outlook
I’ve updated and “Fixed & Repair” Outlook. I’ve “Googled” and MSN’d (just doesn’t have the same ring) to find a solution and nothing has seem to work. I’ve reset all my settings in Outlook, almost losing all of my loads of client e-mail data. And I’ve done and redone and done again all of the steps trying to get this thing to synch. No luck.
If anyone out there has come across this, let me know. I’m dying to get this thing going and begin to share more Microsoft experience on this blog with everyone.
Come on Microsoft! What’s the deal. It’s Outlook 2003 and ActiveSync 4.1. The most current versions of both applications, both have been updated with the latest patches and fixes. Why can’t you get your own programs to play nicely together.
[Let the anti-Microsoft comments begin!, even though I’m not going to agree with you]

Jonathan and Cliff…I finally got things to work by uninstalling Outlook, deleting the device from ActiveSync then uninstalling it, then reinstalling Outlook first, then ActiveSync. It basically came down to trial and error and retrying it.
I’ve got everything working now and am very pleased with my PPC-6700 device.

shocking how difficult this is right? I have the same problem and still no idea how to fix - dont tell me that the only way to fix this is to reinstall office and then install activesync .. the target audience for this is corporates and how do you do that easily when you have a large network of workstations? ouch!
incidentally i have the same issue and no fix as yet :( tried the above :(

I also have a Qtek9100; I gave up trying to fix this problem, but a workaround is just to keep on trying to sync. After 2 attempts I typically get a critical error, which tells me that my settings are lost (true for my email settings), but the next attempt then works.

This sometimes helps fix one of these two ActiveSync error codes - 85010014 & 86000209 - using WM5 and AS4.1
“Open outlook on your desktop/laptop. Click on “help” at the top of the page, and from the dropdown menu, click “detect and repair”. Re-boot your system when it has completed (optional?). The sync problem often goes away”
(I use Outlook 2003, W2K, WM5 & AS4.1)
AS4.1 seems to be the culprit, probably it was not properly tested, and I’ve seen similar problems reported in the forums with AS4.2 beta
I dread the prospect of having to reinstall Outlook

Update. After deleting old partnership, uninstalling then reinstalling AS4.1, then creating new partnershit it was working fine for a day. Errors 85010014 & 86000209 on home PC went away.
Then I synced with 2nd PC (one at work) and now have trouble on the home PC, this time error 85010017 keeps happening “server is busy”. I don’t know if connecting to 2nd PC is linked to this new fault. I deleted the 2nd partnership but this didn’t help.
Now it may be Outlook that is the cause, I really don’t know and after looking at many websites including Microsoft’s I don’t know how to find out the cause or how to prevent it.
I can’t keep deleting the main partnership (even though that fixes it) because data input on handheld (contacts, appointments, etc) may be lost and emails on handheld definitely get wiped by this.
(Outlook 2003, W2K, WM5 & AS4.1)
Still trying to avoid Outlook reinstall as it probably won’t cure it anyway.

Hi I have a Audiovox Pocket PC 6700. I’m also having an issue with active sync 4.1 everytime I try to sync my 6700 My computer goes to a blue screen and says it has encountered a fatal error. I have to restart the computer. I believe it’s the same error you refer to. I had a ppc 6600 and had no problem syncing 3.8. I’ve done everything, turned off firewall, antispyware but still get same thing. I tried 4.2 but did nothing. any help would be appreciated.

Hi.
I too have had problems connecting my I-mate K-JAM (aka Qtek 9100) via ActiveSync 4.2.
When checking my Firewall settings, I found that a registry setting had been “corrupted” so the Firewall service wouldn’t start properly. Still, it stopped the ActiveSync and by checking google, I found this blog describing how to fix the registry:
http://blogs.geekdojo.net/andy/archive/2004/08/31/2983.aspx
After refurbishing the registry, the Firewall was OK and -Voila- up came the ActiveSync connection.
Hope this will help some of you.

I myself was desperately searching for help on 85010014. I was reluctant to follow the multiple places instructions on uninstalling and reinstalling everything as none was actually explaining what exactly is expected to be fixed by doing so.
After trying everything else I read about with no avail what has actually worked for me was (amazingly!!!) is only one USB port out of three in my laptop can do this, while the other two keep producing the 85010014 error (these two USBs work just fine with every other USB device).
Go figure! I am still to see if this one-out-of-three USB port solution will last…

I solved the issue of the ActiveSync critical error 86000209 by only syncing the headers in my Outlook mailbox for the last 3 days. If I do more that that or add the 3KB of an email, I get the error. I use a Motorola Q with AS4.1 and Outlook 2003 SP2.

I have an Imate JAMin and had Outlook 2002 with pop3 acct. All no worries with AS4.1 syncing via USB.
Now I have upgraded to Outlook2003 with an Exchange 2003 acct on it (no pop3 acct any more)and I can’t seem to sync properly. Even blew away the relationship etc…. I chose to sync with my PC and not direct with the Exchange server because I’m a little worried about AS4.1 trying to establish GPRS connection all the time.
Does anyone know if this is possible. Haven’t done any “detect and repair” yet or re-install AS4.1.

Singular 8125 synched beautifully for about 3 weeks. Then I got 85010017 error. I cut back to Notes and contacts and that would synch. Mail and Calendar would not synch. I archived my mail so there was only one small test message to sych. It couldn’t do it.
I upgraded to 4.2, reinstalled Outlook 2003, hard reset my 8125, all this several times to no avail.
I am now 2 weeks without synching and thinking of tossing the whole thing. Is anyone from Microsoft monitoring forums like this?

Same problem: AS4.1 and Qtek 9100. Doesn’t work since I’m back from vacation. No synchronisation anymore; always the same message ‘no partnership’
I don’t get any error codes though.
Can’t they spend some time by Microsoft to solve their own problems??

Hey guys,
Let me start by saying thanks for all your hard work so that I don’t have to think lol, secondly Jason’s method:
uninstalling Outlook, deleting the device from ActiveSync then uninstalling it, then reinstalling Outlook first, then ActiveSync.
Yea its a bit of work, but it works wonderfully and im now totally happy with my ipaq!

something to try people - when I have sync problems via usb (my exchange server will not sync via the remote server but will do the local stuff) I switch on my wifi connection and sync via this instead while connected via usb.
It shows on the screen as syncing via the cable though I have no idea if actually it is syncing via wifi or not.
It definitely works for me :)

Well, I too had this problem with ActiveSync 4.2 and Office 2007. After reading these Forum comments I decided to shut down my Trend Micro Firewall and re-initiate Windows Firewall and “Voila”… the world according to Uncle Bill!
Now I suspect that if I had taken the time to go tell Trend Micro Firewall that the ActiveSync IP could be trusted then I would have had the same result. For now at least I just want a first sync out of this very cool and new HTC TyTn.
Hope this helps…

Well after three months of grief I am making progress with ActiveSync. I’m sharing this saga so hopefully some find it useful.
I’ve been using Active Sync 4.2 beta over USB 2 connection at home and work. Syncing at home was a disaster using ActiveSync 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 with constant time consuming sync failures of assorted error numbers.
1. I then upgraded my home PC from Windows 2000 to XP and of course this involved installing Outlook 2003 from scratch.
The number of sync errors reduced significantly but they were still happening too often. When they happened they were normally fixed by rebooting my PC and my Windows Mobile 5 PDA. Sometimes I also had to rename the device to fix the problem.
Usually the fix resulted in ActiveSync deleting all outlook emails from the device before reloading them. This took ages to run so I gave up syncing emails and relied on the pop3 email functions of my PDA.
After connecting the PDA to sync, the PC is inactive for a long period before any syncing takes place. Windows task manager shows almost no CPU utilisation even when I disabled my firewall and virus scanner.
All still frustrating but better than before.
My office PC runs XP, Outlook 2003 and ActiveSync 4.2. It rarely has sync problems but they do occasionally happen. I can’t figure why syncing on the office PC is much more reliable than my home PC.
My conclusion is that ActiveSync 4.2 or at least its USB connection method is riddled with serious bugs and wasn’t properly tested by Microsoft. Is Microsoft listening to all the complaints?
2. Then this week I upgraded my home PC by installing Bluetooth. It took some effort to configure ActiveSync but I got it to work. So far after two days it has been very reliable with no sync errors! I hope it stays this way. I also like the way that syncing is initiated and controlled by the device.
My conclusion is to stay using Bluetooth to sync at least until the USB sync method is fixed.
I decided not to go back to syncing outlook emails because I can’t send replies to outlook emails on the road via GPRS whereas I can send real-time replies to pop3 emails using GPRS. If anyone is able to send real-time replies to outlook emails via GPRS I’d love to know how.
It’s not practical to install Bluetooth on my office PC but the USB sync method so far works fairly well on it.
Even when it works ActiveSync functionality is too limited and doesn’t give the user enough control. I have a long list of improvements I think should be made, but that’s another topic.
Hope some of this helps!

I’m working again. My problem was the calendar. Someone gave me a recurring appointment with a large file attached and that made my calendar to hard to swallow I guess. Anyway I archived my calendar for anything older than 30 days and I am back synching again.
Sol, if you use Outlook 2003 at the office you can GPRS if you have OWA (Outlook Web Access) installed on your work server.
Sol
Aug 31, 2006 at 12:39 pm
Hi Richard, thanks for OWA suggestion.
We have the equivalent of OWA for work purposes only via blackberry and WiFi laptop PC.
However, my PDA Windows Mobile 5 is for personal use only and is not connected to the office exchange server. I do sync it in the office but this is only to copy Outlook work appointments and contacts, not emails.
I am looking for a better solution for my personal emails.
On my mobile, when I am away from home and on the move, I can read and send personal emails via pop3/smtp over GPRS, which is great.
If instead I sync my personal emails with my personal Outlook at home I have a copy of the Outlook emails on my mobile. Advantages of using Outlook emails on the mobile include: use of same folder structure, emails deleted on the mobile also get deleted from the PC, the read flag is preserved, etc.
However, the problem with Outlook emails on the mobile is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to send a reply to any of these emails via GPRS, i.e. in real-time. All it does is put the reply in the outbox on my mobile, which when I sync again at home is copied to the outbox on my home Outlook, after which I can send out the email from my home Outlook, i.e. not real-time.
Maybe someone has a solution, such as a way to move emails in the mobile between the Outlook section and the pop3/smtp section.

Try downloading ActiveSync 4.2.
Hard reset your 8125
turn it on and let it finish its reboot reset cycle
delete 4.1 off PC
intstall 4.2
follow the instructions on the 4.2 install from there.

Very ugly this activesynch business. You know I buy Microsoft because of the integration capabilities of Office. This just blows my mind that 2 MS products, built for each other, would have so many problems. ActiveSync can’t seem to accomplish the specific task for which it was created!. BTW we have no problem with Palm or Blackberry, go figure.

Same problem with my Palm Verizon which runs Windows Mobile 5. Moved to ActiveSync 4.2 and did all the reinstall things. It works now. Microsoft Reader would not install and tech support was beyond useless at Microsoft. Moved to MobiPocket reader and love it. Also use MobiTV and that is great - I can watch the news wherever I am, if I have some spare time to kill!

Guys,
this thing is simple to solve. I used my QTEK
it has trouble with the naming of the device and profile in your actsync
steps that fix mine:
1. unplug
2. delete profile of your device on your notebook/desktop active sync
3. connect cable back to device
4. create new profile
you back in business.

Hi all,
What can I say - Another great piece of software from Microsoft. Thanks all for all your ideas.
I have problems with my PC synchronizing, it does nothing. Tryed a few things. Nothing seemed to work. I then got a message one time about it could not open outlook so i repaired outlook and restarted the computer then it worked.
The next day I tried to synchronise again but nothing happened once again. tried repairing outlook again and it still did not work.
So i thought i would try restarting the PC with the imate connected and guess what it worked.
Also i had a look at a few items in outlook and found that it may be caused by the way i had things set up.
Anyway there is another possible way of solving the problem.

I finally called Microsoft about the problem. Dished out $35. Can’t believe how simple the answer was. My profile in *Outlook* had become corrupted.
We deleted the partnership between Activesync and my PDA.
We backed up my current profile (File-Export), created I new profile for Outlook (Control Panel - Mail in classic view), imported data from backup (File -import).
Then we created a new partnership between activesync and my PDA.
Voila.
Hope this helps!

I’m having problems with Activesync 4.2 and a Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard) WM5 device (it’s on the latest G4 HW revision running the 2.26 rom).
I have a lot of contacts (over 2000) and calendar entries (over 8000). Takes much longer to sync than with my ‘old’ ppc2003 devices and activesync 3.7. (initial sync takes hours instead of minutes).
I am also having problems with all day calendar entries appearing differently on the pocketpc than in outlook - instead of showing up at the top as a single one day entry, some of them show up as 24 hour (or less) periods split over 2 days.
And also my pocket pc becomes very slow when initially opening Contacts and Calendar as well as sometimes dialling numbers (numbers appear seconds later) even when nothing else is open and there is 20mb program memory free..
I already did the hard reset, reinstall windows and outlook route a few times with no results.
I suspect the problem is Activesync 4.x is less robust with corruptions of data, so I started fresh with a new pst file and did see some improvements. What I did was run outlook repair on outlook and ran repair on my pst file. Then I created a new pst and copied the contacts and calendar folders there.
With these changes, I was able to synchronize to the end, but stil have the same problems with the all-day items. Also, the pocket pc is a little faster now, but still very slow with contacts and calendar. Contacts opens immediately, but does not respond to names typed in the search field for the first 30 seconds. Calendar takes 30 seconds to open and then another 30 seconds to go to switch days. After that, both applications run fairly smoothly. The dialler delay is better most of the time - numbers appear a little less than a second later. But during calls it can slow down again. I know people that have the same device with similar numbers of contacts/appointments that don’t have the slow down.
I guess there are still some corruptions or weird data in the contacts and calendar data that Outlook accepts but cause problems for WM5 devices. But how do I find them? Activesync gives me no details, scanpst says the file is clean. To an extent, I miss the old Activesync 3.x that would on occasion point out appointments that had corrupted e-mail addresses, etc. (even if it caused the corruption in the first place ;-)
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have a Sprint device PA10A1 and ActiveSync 4.2 and am developing a smart app for the pocket pc. All other devices work with syncing except this Sprint device. The error I get on the device is that I need ActiveSync 4.0 or greater installed which is silly as I have 4.2 installed. I don’t have Outlook installed on my dev box and won’t be installing it. Is there a dependency between these? Maybe we just can’t support this device.

I guess my last message got censored so I’ll try again.
I’m still having the same problems with my phone. Activesync can be slow and buggy (crash while syncing, transferring files) - problems with some all day appointments showing up as 24 (sometimes longer or shorter) periods instead of just an all day item at the top. WM 5 on my Cingular 8125 is very slow in navegating phone and calendar entries.
On a side note, my work phone was recently upgraded from a Razr V3 to a new Nokia model. I was surprised within a few minutes I was able to setup the bluetooth connection and quickly synchronized calendar and contacts with no major issues. All day appointments are correct, calendar and contacts navigation quick. Maybe I should swap my Cingular 8125 for a model in nokias line with a keyboard….

Hi…
I am the network administrator for a local school district. Our administrators were using Smart Phones and PDAs for a few months with great success. Out of the blue - they quit working with the same mobile device error; 0×8501004. Tried everything I could, searched the internet, Microsoft, for answers, no luck. I ended up reapplying SP2 for Exchange Server 2003… everything worked like a champ again. I keep all of our servers up to date with patches. Something in one of the latest round of patches hosed activesync on our server. I’m in the process of trying to see which patch is the culprit.

Had problems with 3rd party application. The solution was to export everything from outlook.
Calender, notes etc. Then re-import back into outlook. Was surprised to see that most of the notes and appointments shrunk in size but were not missing any data.
Let active sync replace on content on the PDA with the new data

Shocking isn’t it. It should be so easy, and I’ve had it working on other servers, but when a problem pops up it’s a nightmare.
I’ve had microsoft rdp in to a server for 4 hours solid and they still couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. Got to a point where it works on an emulator, but not on 3 different windows mobile 5 devices. Wierd.

WHAT I DID THAT WORKED (for now, at least)
- Turn off Windows (and any other) Firewall
- Backup Outlook to a .pst file, just in cast
— Outlook> File > Import Export > Export to File > Personal Folder File (.pst) > select top level Folder (repeat for any other top level folders)
- Remove PPC from USB connection to PC
- Go to Activesync> File > Delete Mobile Device
- Connect PPC to PC with USB connection
- When asked, only Sync Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Favorites first
- After successful sync, to to > Tools> Options> add Notes (I have a lot of Note files, which seemed to be the source of my problems in the past.)
- This should result in an automatica sync that will hopefully be successful.

None of the above ever worked for me reliably even to a clean device with a fresh hard reset.
I did get it to do a full sync a few times, but every time it left the WM 5 device I had (Cingular 8125) extremely slow (it could take 30-60 secs just to open contacts or to navigate in calendar from one day to another).
I tried hard for 3 months to get the sync to work for a real amount of data (2000+ contacts, 4000+ appointments). Finally, I met so many people having the same issue with wm5 and activesync 4, I just gave up and moved on to a Symbian device.
I recently purchased an SE M600i which is working so much more nicely. I got a full sync on the first try!! And, despite having all my contacts and appointments on it, the interface is nice and quick. This phone does have some sync issues, but nothing like I had with my WM5 device. (If you want a symbian phone with a near perfect, effortless sync - try the SE 910 - I got the 600 because I wanted something smaller).
Good luck!

This is amazing. I have no desire to “uninstall outlook” or anything else from my PC. What kind of shoddy business is that?? But, as well, no other suggestions worked for me either. I’ve been using activesync with Office 2003 and Office 2007 Beta with no probs (ActiveSync 4.1). I moved to Office 2007 RTM and a week later (not immediately) syncing stopped working. I also tried it with 4.2 and 4.5 beta of activesync to no avail.
This is just unbelievable! Even my colleague has the same problem and out of 110 people in our company, nobody has figured it out yet - and we are one of the Microsoft’s Gold Partners!!!

Its the firewall.
I had similar problems with ActiveSync 4.1 and xda Mini S. Although my firewall was specifically commanded to enable all active Sync activities, it still caused problems, allowed me to drag and drop files but REFUSED to synchronise.
Bottom line, I turned off the firewall (Zone Alarm) and it works fine! Will need to fine tweak firewall though, dont want nasty hackers.

Just got a HP hw6945 unlocked for $600.
I previously had and still own Palm Vx, Treo 270, Treo 680, Symbian devices.
In sum, at WM5 this OS is at best beta ready. Same for the devices. There are so many issues that allgo back to core bad programming, lousy testing and no support, that MS should can the whole thing. Maybe they are even doing it. There is no KB section for WM5 to be found…
In a bigger picture, also the recent Palm OS 5 has its (similar) issues, but they are not as grave as WM5. Further, the slow down in performance (waiting 60 sec for a phone to boot up ???), syncing and lack of basics (HTML email ???) combined with draw of battery (mine lasts 6h with minimal phone calls) is so primal, that the nice design and all-around features (WiFi, GPS, Cell & PDA in one box) become pale and irrelevant.
Sorry MS, just another MS screw up.
PS as to the error: It appears to be a badly designed syncing protocol that has problems with writing and keeping track of what is going on for itself. Just bad programming. No executive will want to deal with that.

I’ve had all sorts of issue with Active Sync 4.1 / 4.2 with my PocketPc running Windows Mobile 5.0, the fix I found that worked instantly was to download Microsoft Active Sync 4.5
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9e641c34-6f7f-404d-a04b-dc09f8141141&DisplayLang=en
FIXED!

I am running already OL 2003, ActiveSync 4.5 and all the latest patches. The sync issues are abundant. It may take as little as to remove the ipaq from the cradle and putting it back and all of a sudden the sync process does not start, it appears discinnected, does not transfer email data, but calendar and vice versa, in all various combinations. Then this connection troubler shooter comes up, does a test run, builds its log and wants to send it to Redmond. No reply or solution ever from them.
I think this is all high priced beta testing. Palm had been at that level ten years ago. MS is just ten years behind everything, Apple, iPod, Palm, you name it…

I am running version 4.5 of active sync with my T-Mobile MDA and all had been working perfect until today. I Googled error number 85010014 and found this site. After reading all of the helpful information above, I was just about to uninstall/reinstall when I decided to check the Task Manager to see what was running.
I found that even though I DID NOT have Outlook open, there was 2 instances of OUTLOOK.EXE running. Using the Task Manager, I closed both instances out and then I plugged in my MDA. Viola, it synced without a hitch.
I hope this helps someone else, because I know that I went crazy for like an hour trying to get this thing working.

Gentlemen, I think firewall is the issue and there is no need to uninstall AS or OL. I tried deleting the profiles several times; it did help to hook AS to OL but still did not sync the contacts. I disable the firewall (Windows own) - the sync went perfect and everything was backed up. I re-enabled the firewall, re-syncked - the sync went OK. I guess the firewall settings are somewhat esoteric.
PS. For a number of other software packs, it is also recommended to start them first without firewall to let them train, then restart firewall and restart the program. Oh that MS…

Thank you Papasik for that information. It is odd to recommend that you have to turn off Microsoft’s own firewall to make sure applications run properly initially. The “training” idea makes sense though.

i followed one of the suggestions above and the 85010014 error was gone and syncing is ok. I simply went to “help” in outlook 2003 and then “Detect and Repair”. Check “Restore” but unckeck “Discard”, then hit OK. After a while the repair is done and syncing occurred again, this time without the nasty error!
I am using Win2000, AS4.1, WM5, and Outlook 2003. Hope this helps.

After several months using a Symbian device (SE M600i) I really missed some things about the Pocket PC platform. And when I started using the push mail solution for the M600i I found it no longer let me sync the device directly with the laptop. Which was my main reason for switching…. So I decided to give it WM a try again with a Cingular 8525 (I got a good deal on Ebay).
I upgraded the 8525 to WM2006 (you can find instructions on the internet) and am using ActiveSync 4.5 with no problems at all. The sync worked the first time perfectly. I had one small problem later that was resolved by turning off “advanced tcpip” or something similar.
I really can’t believe how much better it is. For those of you that can upgrade your firmwares to WM2006, you may want to try it. And for those of you still stuck with synch issues - I feel your pain - good luck!

I had the problem of being stuck on “Syncronizing”…
What I FINALLY figured out was to allow port exceptions in the firewall to allow ActiveSync through. I had blocked this on the domain, so I added the following ports to be allowed through:
- 990: open inbound TCP port
- 999: open inbound TCP port
- 5678: open inbound TCP port
- 5679: open outbound UDP port
- 5721: open inbound TCP port
- 26675: open inbound TCP port
(all i had to do was read the help file with activesync…’doh!!!)
As SOON as I enabled this, activesync worked like a charm!!
I hope that helps someone as frustrated as I have been.

I was having the 86000209 error. The info I found that helped me fix mine was at:
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange_errors.php
Summary: In ActiveSync (I did it on PC, others say do it on handheld, I assume it doesn’t matter) open Options and DEselect email for synch. You get a warning about removing email from the handheld. Fine.
When you save the change, you sync automatically. Mine proceeded smoothly and…voila. Back in business. Later, you go back and REselect email so you start synching again.
FYI: My problem started after I developed a problem with my outlook.pst file. I could no longer send or received. After many attempts to solve the problem (detect/repair, repair from Add/Remove, use scanpst and one or two others I don’t remember now) I simply renamed outlook.pst, re-opend outlook, and started fresh with a new pst, then imported stuff from the old file manually. New file is fine, but the synch problem kicked in.
Now that’s okay, too.
Thanks, everyone.

Dudes,
You are yanking your batteries without shutting down first.
Bad boys!
I had the 86000209 error, but not today. Why? Because I powered off last night, and never swapped batteries yet today.
(Now, if I can just get Comodo to accept AS, I can sync thru my firewall…)

If you are part of a domain you need to be a local administrator of the domain on the PC. This can be done under user accounts. The problem is with the Windows firewall, but adding the user as an administrator will sort this issue. I am sure that user not part of the domain, mmust make sure they have administrator rights on the local machine, and then check the firewall to make sure it allows active sync and it’s components.

85010017 is what I get when Quickbooks 2008 is running. Seems QB has an Outlook contact DDE and locks the connection. If the phone is plugged in first or QB is not running then Async can do it’s thing. Earlier versions of QB had a contact sync to Outlook too. Could be an issue for some of you.
