Xbox scarce in UK before Christmas

by John on November 8th, 2005

The Xbox 360 will be difficult to obtain in the UK before Christmas, reports the British press. Huge demand has left retailers warning of shortages. If you haven’t ordered by now, you are unlikely to get this year’s “must have” Yuletide gift.

If you hoped to order online, think again. Amazon UK has already given notice of “limited supply”. Delivery dates are currently well into the New Year. PC World’s stock has already sold out, reports the Daily Mail.

Xbox 360 goes on sale in the shops on December 2 at £279.99 (GBP), but buyers are likely to be disappointed. Microsoft expects to ship up to 5.5m units by June, but admits demand will exceed supply this year. Already the Xbox is being offered at £800 (GBP) on eBay. Amazon has announced, “We are confident of fulfiling all our existing orders but we are not guaranteeing Christmas delivery for any orders we take now.”

The console is in such demand because of its versatility. It’s not just a games machine. It plays DVDs and CDs and has an inbuilt broadband connection that allows users to make free phone and video calls anywhere in the world. Its wireless connection also opens up the streaming of TV programs from a PC.
